The Roer

This idyllic river is a tributary of the Meuse. On Dutch territory its length is almost 22 km. The Roer enters the Netherlands in Vlodrop. On her route to the Maas in Roermond she passes Herkenbosch, Melick and Sint Odiliënberg.

The delta originally consisted of three estuaries, of which two remain: the actual Roer and the Hambeek.

The fish stock in the Roer.

With more than 50 common fish species, the Roer is one of the richest waters in the Netherlands. Species such as dace, snape, grayling and barbel are some of the fish that have a habitat in the flowing nature of this river.
VBC ROERDAL
The VBC Roerdal, in full Stichting Visstand Beheercommissie Roerdal, is a partnership between the four associations with fishing rights on the Roer: HSV de Rietvoorn Vlodrop, HSV St. Petrus Herkenbosch, HSV Posterholt-St. Odiliënberg and HSV de Rietvoorn Ool-Herten.

Two members of each association are delegated to the VBC Roerdal. The aim is the fisheries management of the Dutch Roer from Vlodrop to Roermond.

The salmon project

Since 1996, the VBC Roerdal has been working closely with the German managers of the Roer, who together with the German government (including biologists), Wasserverband Eifelrur and Kreis representatives form the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Lachs und Meerforelle 2020 (ARGE). The aim of this Arge is to reintroduce salmon and sea trout in the Rur/Roer by 2020 and to achieve a self-sustaining population in the long term. A lot of money and effort has been invested for this for years and a great deal of knowledge has already been built up in those years. Every year, around 100,000 small salmon are released in the side streams of the Roer from our own breeding with fertilized salmon eggs. Salmon eggs from salmon from the French Allier are currently used for the Roer, as these appear to have the most genetic similarities with the original Maas stock. Adult returnees, who are caught throughout the year in the fish pass at the ECI WKC, are transported to the Belgian nursery in Erezée and troweled in the autumn. Half of the fertilized eggs also go to our own nursery at Obermaubach in the German Eifel. Almost all returnees are from the Loire-Allier tribe.

In this way an attempt is made to build up our own Roerstam of salmon again.
Vistrap and the ECI-Central

This project was suddenly threatened in 2000 by the intention of NUON/Nederstroom to restore the old ECI hydroelectric power station in the Roer in Roermond and put it back into use. A fish ladder and fish guide were not included in these plans, while the fish ladder built in the eighties of the last century between the Roer and the Hambeek could never function properly because the main current of the Roer would continue to flow via the hydroelectric power station. Partly at the insistence of the VBC Roerdal, a committee was formed to monitor the interests of the Roer ecosystem and therefore also the fish stock below.

This ultimately led to the renovated fish passage between the Roer and Hambeek being operational in 2007 and the fish ladder and fish guide around the ECI power station in the spring of 2008. This saved the salmon project and continued work on the reintroduction.
monitoring

Both fish ladders are equipped with cages for up and down fish. From 2008 to 2014, the Roer and Overmaas Water Board, in collaboration with volunteers from the sport fisheries/VBC Roerdal, investigated the effectiveness of the measures taken: are fish moving from the Meuse to the Roer and vice versa and in what quantities of which species? , etc. The mechanical fish guide (Feinrechen with 10 mm openings) no longer causes damage from the turbines.
